The charming Mirage Roasting Company sits in the San Luis Valley in southwestern Colorado on Highway 17.   One woman told me that there is 1 person for every 2 square miles of land out there, which makes it the least densely populated area in Colorado.

The entire valley consists of acres of farm land for potatoes, barley, quinoa, etc. and sits on top of Colorado’s largest aquifer providing life-giving water to this high desert landscape.

Mirage Roasting Co. also houses an art trading business and cafe where both the locals and tourists gather.  Lisa, barista and roaster, explained that they purchased a roaster about a year ago and now roast several pounds a week.  Several of the area’s restaurants are now serving their specialty, single-origin coffees.  They are proud of their 100% organic, fair trade beans and so is the community.  They wish to remain small and specialized and never compromising quality.

On my tour of the Valley I also discovered The Great Sand Dunes National Park, a restaurant that raises and serves grass-fed yak, an alligator farm, the international spiritual hub of Crestone, and a UFO lookout tower.

What a grand adventure!  This is what road trips are for … to discover the uniqueness of our country.

This is what its about … real people!

My Coffee House has terrific food & coffee & they’re ever so caring

From an editorial in The Laconia Daily Sun, Laconia, NH (photo from Yelp)

To the editor,
This is the season that soup is quite warming, that is unless you drop it.
I was leaving one of my favorite lunch stops, My Coffee House, when I went to reposition my hand and the bag slipped and crashed right by the entryway. Shrimp and Roasted Corn Chowder poured out from the bag — my four dollar lunch, gone. Scooping to get up what I can, the owner of the store leans over my shoulder and says, “We’ll get you another one”.
I am so grateful I had to write this letter to the paper to give a public, “Thank You!”
Not only does My Coffee House have terrific food and coffee but the family owned business is ever so caring! It is not a surprise they are in their 4th year open! I’ll continue to get my lunch, especially the yummy soup from the family of John and Cheryl, and their son Brandon, Morin, at My Coffee House in Laconia. I had already left the store, so for them to be so nice deserves public attention.

Dawn is the happy, welcoming barista AND the owner of the light-filled, corner location in downtown Bremerton. It its just a ferry ride away from Seattle across the Puget Sound.

If I understand it correctly, the community has been hit heavily with high unemployment numbers. But you’d never know it, the people are very kind and generous here.

Maybe it because they can get a good cuppa joe at Dawn’s place. Stop in when you’re in town!

Andy lives and breathes organics!   He bakes gluten-free delicacies in his on-site kitchen and roasts his single-origin beans with great dare.  His roaster is at a special location where he can

My sister and I shared his Green Chili Quiche with a GF crust to go along with our rich and delicious americanos.  Gotta tell you, that a week later, I STILL desire the taste of the quiche in my mouth … MmmmmMmm!

Toward the back of the space is a large community table with a LARGE coffee  mug, too.  Betcha I could drink that whole thing full of his Silver Sky Coffee!

Wow!

This place in Steamboat Springs, Colorado is awesome!  I love it when you can drink coffee and buy a good book while supporting local business.

I stopped in after a photo shoot for our Sisters on the Fly caravaned through downtown for Irene Rawlin’s next book.

Much love!
